  • Rangelands Scientist/Vegetation Ecologist - Earthwatch
POSITION SUMMARY:The rangelands scientist will work on two projects within the Oman Earthwatch Programme: the Jebel Samhan Biodiversity Project and the Juniper and Olive Woodlands Project. For both projects the key role of the rangelands scientist will be to assess the interactions between local people and rangeland condition, with a focus on sustaining rangeland health to support wildlife as well as local livelihoods.Jebel Samhan Biodiversity ProjectThe Jebel Samhan Reserve is the largest Protected Area in Oman, and encompasses a wide variety of habitats from monsoonal woodlands to desert plains. It hosts a number of endemic and rare species, including the critically endangered Arabian Leopard. There has been little systematic research into the abundance, richness and distribution of vegetation on Jebel Samhan. However, previous studies suggest that the browsing and grazing of domestic goats, cattle and camels may be an important contributor to degradation of habitats across the mountain range. The Jabel Samhan biodiversity conservation project aims to work with local pastoral communities and other stakeholders to build understanding and capacity to manage natural resources more sustainably, while securing local livelihoods. The rangelands scientist/vegetation ecologist will work together with other project team members to undertake a preliminary assessment of vegetation and habitat conditions across project area and explore how current levels of stocking and pastoral management may be affecting this. As appropriate, the rangelands scientist will (in consultation with other stakeholders) contribute to the development of strategies for the enhanced management of rangelands and natural resources. Juniper and Olive Woodlands ProjectThis project is focused on the montane juniper woodlands found only above 2000m on Oman’s tallest mountains, Jebel Akhdar and Jebel Shams. These woodlands are home to many rare and endemic species of flora and fauna, and are also highly valued by the Omani people as a source of local livelihoods and as a popular tourist attraction. The Woodlands Project seeks to protect this unique ecosystem through empowering both local and national stakeholders to develop sustainable natural resource management strategies and actions. An initial vegetation assessment has been completed for the juniper woodlands, so the role of the rangeland scientist will primarily be to identify ways of improving current rangeland condition, and initiating pilot projects in cooperation with a range of stakeholders, and contributing to local environmental management plans.DELIVERABLES:• Design and implement studies to rapidly assess the composition, distribution and condition of vegetation, and characterize vegetation dynamics across the project area. These studies should aim to identify and assess major threats to the integrity of vegetation and habitats and determine ways of mitigating these• Explore possibilities for enhancing the sustainability of land management and environmental health in Jebel Samhan, including (if appropriate), recommendations for altered livestock management regimes and stocking rates.• Work with the Woodlands Project team to develop suitable pilot projects that address key threats to the woodland habitat and rangeland condition.• Establish targets and indicators for improved vegetation and habitat health, and design a simple mechanism for ongoing monitoring and evaluation • Provide training and mentorship for staff of collaborating institutions, with a view to building institutional capacity for ongoing research and conservation management• To disseminate project findings, lessons and results to an audience beyond project stakeholders e.g through published papers, reports, presentations or lectures as applicable.Job Details Date Posted: 2014-08-26 Job Location: Muscat, Oman Job Role: Education/Training Company Industry: Science Preferred Candidate Career Level: Mid Career Apply Now - Jobs in Oman - Education/Training Jobs in Oman - Search All Jobs
